Me & My Philosophy

My name is Helena Greenwood, I’ve been a Registered Osteopath since 1999 (prior to that I had a career in IT technical & sales).

As an osteopath, my focus is very much on the health & function of the whole family – from babies & children to mums, dads, grandparents, friends – and not forgetting family pets (I also treat animals – mainly dogs & horses, but most things considered!).  I’ve always lived in and around the community I work in, and my personal ethos is ‘small circles’ – recommending & being recommended to people I know, buying local, getting involved, being rooted in the community.

Osteopathy for me is about CONNECTIVITY and ADAPTABILITY – not just the physical connections within the body, but how we connect with our environment – our workplace, our family, our friends, our sense of spirituality – and how we adapt to the physical, emotional & physiological strains that situations, infections, injuries, gravity – just life in general – impose on us.

Osteopathy for me is about helping people (or animals) find ways to adapt better through physical treatment that affects the nervous system on many levels, not just in relation to pain or movement but also that part of the nervous system (the autonomic nervous system) which is involved with the body’s self-regulation & self-healing capacities.  It’s through our nervous system that we interact with the world and how our body regulates its internal environment, and I think it’s likely that many ‘alternative’ treatments act by modifying input into the nervous system on a number of levels.

As an Osteopath, I work using a variety of techniques – massage, articulation, manipulation – but my predominant expertise is in the Cranial (or Cranio-Sacral) osteopathic approach, which I’ve studied & taught at post-graduate level.

The intention of this blog is to share with you stories about some of the patients (human & animal) that I’ve treated over the years, to provide advice and information about various conditions, and to share a little of some of the principles of osteopathy and the values that are important to me in my work (and my life).
